On Saturday, October 17, you have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families living in South Carolina.  A group of women (Women for a Fresh Start for All) here in Columbia have organized a diaper drive from 9-Noon at Heathwood Park.  Bring some diapers and wipes to donate to Harvest Hope.  The items collected will be distributed to families in need. Bonus: Your kids can play in the park while you make your donation and meet new people!

Swampfest and unearth!

Posted by jessica on 02 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: events, places

I really can’t even believe how much is already happening in October!  This Saturday is the Congraee Swampfest.  I had never even heard of this event until today!  It sounds interesting, and I always love a reason to go to the Congaree National Park!  We are so lucky to have a National Park within driving distance.  You really should check it out if you have never been.  So far, we have only taken walks on the boardwalks with the kids, but I would really love to do one of those owl walks or take a hike on one of the trails.  Check out the info on Congaree Swampfest!

Then, on Sunday, you can continue to enjoy the great outdoors when you head out to Saluda Shoals Park for unearth!

The 2nd annual unearth art celebration runs October 1-4 at Saluda Shoals Park.  unearth is a celebration of naturally inspired art.  Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in art, nature, and the creative process. Their are multiple activities planned over the 4 days, but definitely check out the Sunday event that begins at 1:00 pm:

  • A Nature-Inspired Celebration of Art. Experience the creative process as artists share their talents in a natural setting. The afternoon features painters, sculptors, poets, dancers, and musicians creating and performing along the Park’s trails. Unearth concludes with a concert by the Lake Murray Symphony.  Please remember to bring blankets and chairs!  $5 parking fee.

Go, Dog, Go!

I just saw Go, Dog, Go! at the Columbia Children’s Theatre over the weekend.  As usual, it was a wonderful performance, captivating both of my children (ages 2.5 and 5 yrs).  The Theatre’s new space at Midtown at Forest Acres is fabulous, making it even more convenient for in-towners.  No more excuses!  Make plans to see their next show, Frosty, which begins November 27.  It will be a great way to kick off the holiday season!

Ahoy mateys!

Don’t miss Charleston Harbor Fest this weekend!  I used to spend summers on Nantucket Island (thanks McGowan Family!!!!), and let me tell you, it was totally awesome.  In addition to just being in a cool place and working for the coolest family ever, I got to know a lot more about coastal living, harbor festivals, sailing, and such.  When I saw the headline, Tall ships descend on Charleston for Harbor Fest, my very first thought was that my kids have to see the ships.  Real pirate ships (or at least ships like the ones that real pirates used).  Check out Old Charles Town and Pirate Village during Charleston Harbor Fest 2009 starting Friday and running through Sunday, including a Children’s Pirate Parade all three mornings at 11am.  Children are encouraged to dress the part.   Get your eye patches out, pack some snacks, and take a road trip to Charleston this weekend!  For other ideas of things to do in Charleston, see my previous Charleston recap post.
