I love a wild rumpus!

Posted by jessica on 14 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: events, movies

I am sure you know that Where the Wild Things Are opens this week!  There is a ton of press out about the movie, and I really hope it lives up to the hype.  No doubt it looks very, very cool.  While Columbia wasn’t picked as a city to host a premiere (the movie peeps obviously don’t know how hip we are down here!), RCPL is hosting an event so we can get in on the celebratory action!  Don’t miss the Wild Rumpus at RCPL, Main Library, Children’s Room.  Thursday (as in tomorrow!) at 6pm.  Children of all ages are encouraged to dress as a Wild Things character.  All attendees will be entered into a drawing for free movie passes, and refreshments will be served.  Free!  RCPL always puts on a great event, so don’t miss it!

Diaper drive at Heathwood Park

Posted by jessica on 09 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: events, general information, health, parenting, places

On Saturday, October 17, you have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families living in South Carolina.  A group of women (Women for a Fresh Start for All) here in Columbia have organized a diaper drive from 9-Noon at Heathwood Park.  Bring some diapers and wipes to donate to Harvest Hope.  The items collected will be distributed to families in need. Bonus: Your kids can play in the park while you make your donation and meet new people!

Snow White at the Columbia Marionette Theatre

Posted by jessica on 07 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: activities

I keep saying I am going to start a series called the 10 gems of Columbia, but I haven’t done that yet.  If and when I do, you can be sure one of them will be the Columbia Marionette Theatre.  If you haven’t been to a performance there, you should go!  The theatre architecture is interesting, and kids will love that they are entering a castle!  The show never disappoints, and the tickets are so reasonably priced ($4 per person), you really can’t beat it!

I highly recommend you make plans to check out the current show, Snow White, which will be playing until December 19.

Craft studio for children

Posted by jessica on 05 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: activities, crafts, decor

Don’t miss out on a wonderful Halloween-related craft workshop coming up on October 17th and 18th.  Christine Discoe will be hosting a spooky craft studio for children ages 7 and up.  The event is a beginning sewing class that promotes creativity and basic hand-sewing skills.  Parents can choose either a Saturday or Sunday class.  Cost is $18 (all materials included) for the 2.5 hour workshop.  See the flyer for more details and to register to attend.

Butterfly season ending at Edventure

October 11th will mark the end of the season for “Blooming Butterflies” at Edventure.  If you haven’t been, try to squeeze in a visit before the 11th.

Swampfest and unearth!

Posted by jessica on 02 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: events, places

I really can’t even believe how much is already happening in October!  This Saturday is the Congraee Swampfest.  I had never even heard of this event until today!  It sounds interesting, and I always love a reason to go to the Congaree National Park!  We are so lucky to have a National Park within driving distance.  You really should check it out if you have never been.  So far, we have only taken walks on the boardwalks with the kids, but I would really love to do one of those owl walks or take a hike on one of the trails.  Check out the info on Congaree Swampfest!

Then, on Sunday, you can continue to enjoy the great outdoors when you head out to Saluda Shoals Park for unearth!
